The Variability in Phonology of Indonesian Learner’s Interlanguage: A case study on English marked-fricatives

Interlanguage is the most fruitful issue in field of second language acquisition. In interlanguage phase, Indonesian learners English tend to alternate between two forms features express same function where a variation will be exhibited mark variable linguistic function. Variability phonology interesting subject investigate based on markedness differential hypothesis theory. This study aimed at finding out (1) marked sounds fricatives: [θ], [ð], [ʃ], and [ʒ] which are indicated as variants; (2) how sound variants emerge surround varying element. There were 30 college students purposively selected become respondents this research representing advance intermediate proficiency speaking. The data taken from types task namely word list reading sentence reading. 600-word tokens containing target fricative obtained collection. analysis was done quantitatively find percentages non-interlanguge interlanguge ones produced by respondents. result showed that fricatives such have phonological variations with certain positions being pronounced. These due generalization pronunciation similar-ending sounds, vowel preceding absence consonant clusters learners’ native bears English.
